Thanks to everyone for their great feedback on last month’s strings workshop with Lyris Hung from d’Addario. Next month we are holding our own workshop and we are delighted to be welcoming Gerard Le Clerc back to the UK for a workshop and recital in Hungerford.

15/38ths Viola for Sale

Over the years we have sold a number of Benjamin Banks violas which are one of the most successful instruments made in a smaller size (15 3/8″). The Banks workshop of Salisbury were famous violin makers at end of the eighteenth century and their output of violas and celli are especially sought after today.

The smaller sized violas made in Salisbury came in two designs.

In my experience there is only one other maker that comes close to achieving this holy grail of a petite viola that really works and that is JB Guadagnini whose instruments sell for 6 figures. A good Banks instrument can be found for £20,000 plus.

This copy we designed with Nigel Melfi is now selling for only £7,500.

The instrument has a very good tone and is an ideal quartet instrument. To make an appointment to trial this viola please contact the workshop.

Kathrin and I can talk ad-infinitum on the subject but we would like to be governed by those attending so before the event we will send an email with possible subjects for those attending to cover. We are happy to talk about anything violin-wise!

Date: 7pm Thursday 14 April

Venue: Philip Brown Violins, Northbrook St, Newbury

Free event but booking essential with philip@philipbrownviolins.co.uk
