Workshop Technician

 

Philip Brown Violins is looking for an experienced repair and restoration professional.

We are a full-service violin making shop serving beginners as well as  professionals in Newbury. We provide rental instruments,  carry out repairs and restorations and regularly have the opportunity to see and work on good and fine instruments. We are looking for someone with the following abilities:

  • Violin making school diploma (preferably with experience)
  • Ability to solve problems, multi-task and follow up
  • Teamwork orientated, work in a learning environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Self-disciplined and honest
Key areas of responsibility

Restore antique instruments with strong attention to detail

Repair and maintain violins, cellos and bows to a high standard (neck-grafts, crack repairs, patches, new corners and edges, bushings, retouches)

Setting up instruments (bridge cutting, sound-post setting, fingerboard dressing, fitting pegs…)

Re-hairing bows

Customer service

Helping the customers to find the right instrument, bow and accessories

Taking in and processing customer repairs

Dealing with telephone enquiries

General duties as a team member

Attending a weekly team meeting to review and plan the week ahead

Working alternate Saturdays as head of the shop

Following workshop procedures (security, open and close the shop, preparing premises for customers, leaving place clean and tidy)

Occasional tea making and light lunch preparation

Taking a turn to do the washing up
